Q. I don’t have sidebar on my header, how can i add one?
A. Adding a sidebar in wordpress is a quite easy task. You can read instructions here. If you don’t want to add a sidebar consider using PHP template tag instead.

Q. I added this widget to my sidebar but it looks all weird!
A. This widget is intented for wide header widget areas, not regular sidebars. You can add a sidebar to your theme or you can get a all-widget theme from shailan.com. If you don’t want to add a sidebar, you can use php template tag instead. Read php template tag instructions here.

Q. Can i create my own theme?
A. Since this plugin works on CSS, if you are capable of writing CSS, you can customize the theme as you like it. If you want full customization select None as your theme.

Q. I don’t know CSS, how can i customize it?
A. Plugin comes with various themes already installed. If you want something different, then you can request a new theme.

Q. I found a bug! Where do i submit it?
A. You can submit errors and bugs using the online form on my site OR you can submit via wordpress support tags here.

  1. Miles says:

    Is it possible to make the entire li of the menu clickable, rather than just the text anchor?

    1. Matt Say says:

      Yes, actually you can imitate this by giving padding to anchors instead of li elements. This works on some themes by default. On others, you have to fix this using customization. Which theme are you using?

      1. Miles says:

        Thanks. I actually figured that out this afternoon. I’m using a custom theme to fit my WP theme, hence why it probably didn’t work out of the box. Thanks for the followup! Great plugin.

  2. Fuchs says:

    With this version i cannot change the name of “Home”-Button anymore. But the Changelog only say “Added: More detailed faq and plugin banner.”…hmmm, what happened here?

  3. Matt says:

    very nice menu!

    Is it püossible to set the startdepth to Level 2.

    Level 1
    Level 1
    – Level 2
    — Level 3
    — Level 3
    – Level 2
    Level 1
    Level 1

    I want your menu to display only the level 2 and 3 links.

    love your plugin!

    I got a question concerning highlighting of active links. This I need for another plugin called ‘Navigo’ I’m using for my sidebar navigation menu.

    How can wordpress tell which page currently is active and so forth such that the css style defintions

    #access .current-menu-item > a,
    #access .current-menu-ancestor > a,
    #access .current_page_item > a,
    #access .current_page_ancestor > a {
    font-weight: bold;
    color: red;

    will be used, i.e. where do you assign the attribute .current-menu-item to the active page?

    Thanks in advance!

    1. Matt Say says:

      You don’t assign that attribute. This is automatically done by wordpress core. Walker class objects generate page lists. Read more here.

  6. Gabi says:

    just figured it out – take a look. Thanks for the great plugin!

    1. Matt Say says:

      That’s a really cool dropdown theme. Thanks for the link.

  7. Gabi says:

    Need help, Please.

    Is it possible to style your fabulous drop down menu so that all the tabs have a different color? I would like to accomplish this look: http://relationalearning.com/wordpress/

    Here is the page I’m working on: http://relationalearning.com/wordpress/about

    Maybe a white semi-transparent overlay on mouse over so the rollover color is the same just a bit lighter? Could the dropdowns also follow that color palette?

    I hope I’m not asking too much..

    Thank you

    Hi there

    I’m using your Dropdown Menu Widget drop plugin, I was wondering if it is possible to Remove links from sub menus for example I have a menu structure as follows:-

    Menu A
    Menu b
    Menu c
    menu d

    I have removed the link from the top menu ‘i.e. menu A’ however I would like to remove the link from ‘Menu c’

  9. Claudia says:

    where i can change it.

  10. Bill Bender says:

    Followup. If I add a page to the Dropdown Menu by mistake, how do I remove it?

    1. Matt Say says:

      expand menu item and click delete.

  11. Shreyo says:

    it was really easy to use you menu widget, but i felt really hard to customize due to the table structure and other CSS class issues.

  12. Jean-Michel says:

    Works fine with me. Is it possible to place the dropdown menu in the right sidebar instaed of at the top of the page?

    1. Matt Say says:

      Yes that is possible via widgets.

    Hello Shailan.com,

    I am trying to create my first navigation dropdown menu. I’ve already built it in the plugins area, but I can’t activate it in the settings because I don’t have a “header bottom” area. What is the best solution to get your plugin to work? Can you recommend downloading another plugin to allow me to replace my current topnavigation on tinknewman.com? I don’t really understand code, but I know where to copy/paste code, I can do that. What do you recommend?

    Thank you,

    Tink Newman

  19. Felix says:

    Hi, I am using the dropdown menu settings to try and exclude two pages from the left side panel of the website. I need to remove “Find Us” & “Testimonials” I tried to place the page ID into the following: Settings – Dropdown Menu – Template Tag – Exclude Pages Nothing seems to work. Can you please help?

    1. Matt Say says:

      If you are using widget on your sidebar, you need to fill in IDs to the Exclude pages field on widget.

  20. Great website. Thanks for all the good help so far. I was wondering how you make that grey “contents” bar with links to other places in your page, that I see in many of your posts like in this one.

    1. Matt Say says:

      I am using a Table Of Contents plugin. You can find a few out there. For link jumps with effect, I use a small jQuery script.

  21. Dave says:

    So how do we get the dropdowns to close on iPad, such as this?

  22. Phil says:

    hi Matt

    Great plugin — i am using NVidia theme but the submenu item arrows are not displaying in IE – how can i fix this? they are ok in Firefox and Chrome but not IE

  23. Andy says:

    Hi Matt – app works great for me when accessing the site from a pc and mousing over the drop downs. But on a tablet the menus don’t respond to touching the top levels with my finger. Advice?

  24. David says:

    Is there a way of deactivating a top level link but only if it has children?

  25. Techlearns says:

    wow,great plugin…. carry on……

  26. David says:

    Great tool, however does anyone know how to make the top level item inactive if it has child items. The only option in the settings is to make all top level items inactive but some of my pages do not have child pages.

    Thank you in advance

  27. Wim Pelgrim says:

    Tanks for this great plugin. I’m using it om my site http://www.wimpelgrim.nl. I would like to place the menu in the top left corner, without a margin. Do you know how I can do this? Thanks in advace!

    1. Matt Say says:

      Using CSS codes you can align it. Otherwise there is no option for this yet.

  28. Vicktor says:

    Thanks a lot 4 the tool bro. If I wasn’t a student, I’d totally donate. Thanks bro

  29. kazunarii says:

    Why the subcategories are displayed at all times, without rollover cursor on it?

    1. Matt Say says:

      Maybe you have a problem in your theme stylesheet.

  30. Nick says:

    Could it be possible to have pages and catogories in the menu?

    1. Matt Say says:

      You can use Menus under Appearance -> Menus to create your menu and then use it. Or you can use Dropdown Multi Widget to put pages, categories, links side-by-side.

  31. Kirill says:

    Thanks for the plugin. It is really useful!!!! But I’ve got a problem: I want submenu items to dropdown not “onmouseover” but “onclick”. Does anybody know how to get it?

  32. Melissa says:

    Thanks for the plugin. All is well except for some issues in IE- the most troublesome being that the small arrow to show that there is a dropdown isn’t showing up. Any suggestions?

    1. MissStack says:

      I am having the same problem. Has anyone found any solution to the IE problem?

  33. Michael W says:

    The menu runs horizontally in Safari. Anyone else having this issue? and some of the li’s aren’t breaking but showing on the same line.

    1. Jen Ro says:

      Same issue – any solution?

      1. Matt Say says:

        This is probably caused by your stylesheets. Can you please give me a link to your site.

  34. P&V says:

    Very nice dropdown menu. Just what I needed. But is there any way to get it to play nice with nivo slider?

    1. petra vincent says:

      I added a margin of 38px to the top of the slider class and this worked perfectly

  35. Albert says:

    thanks Matt, but from which file do I remove the code?

  36. Albert says:

    I want to say a lot of thanks to you for this plugin, I am using it on this site http://tullowgroupscholarshipscheme.org/english/ but the sub pages are not showing up well…for example those on the Media menu item

    1. Matt Say says:

      You have overflow:hidden on your container div layer:

      .dbx-content{margin:0; padding:5px 10px 9px 10px; overflow:hidden}

      Remove “overflow:hidden” rule for your submenus to appear.

  38. manish says:

    nice menu widget…

  39. Dennis L says:

    Thank you Shailan!

    Now, can you tell me…how to use Dropdown Menu Widget in WP theme “twenty ten” (that does not have widgetized header) ?

  40. angioletto says:

    Hi. Is it possible to create with WP 3.3 and the last version of your plugin, 2 menus, one horizontal under the header and one vertical in the sidebar, using two different themes of your plugin and using widgets? Thanx

    1. Matt Say says:

      Yes you can create two menus.
      No they can’t have two different themes unless you know how to CSS.

  41. Jonesy says:

    Great Widget! only thing I can’t get to work is the Hover Background Color. No matter what I do it resets back to default.

    1. Matt Say says:

      Check your page’s stylesheet code using firebug or chrome inspector.

  42. Nikki says:

    Great update, thanks for keeping up with WordPress updates, not sure what I would do without your menu widget!

  43. Pablo says:

    Thank you for the plugin.
    Is it working on 3.3 now?

    1. Matt Say says:

      I am using dropdown menu on my site. And it’s working.

    2. Nikki says:

      Ditto Matt Say’s response. I have it running on 3.3 as well. Only thing I’ve noticed so far is that I can’t seem to turn off the functionality of the top level not being active. Meaning, can’t get it so you can’t click the top level page when there are child pages, but I may be missing something.

      1. Matt Say says:

        Removing links is a jquery process. If you checked option on options page, maybe there is a problem with your jQuery. Normally if effects are working, remove top level links should work too.

  44. yadi says:

    Hi Shailan,

    Thank you for your video. Now I can create dropdown menu on my site

  45. katie says:

    Is there a way to keep the options of each drop down menu item on one line instead of it requiring a couple lines. Maybe making the font smaller? “Wrap long menu items” box doesn’t change this. Thanks! You’ve done such a fantastic job with this.

    1. Matt Say says:

      You can change font size of sub menus using CSS like this:

      ul.dropdown ul li a{ font-size:10px; }
  46. Greg says:

    Sorry if this was asked before. I started with twenty eleven and installed this plugin, and the drop-down menu works great. But then when I install any other theme it stops working as a dropdown menu. This even happens when I use a child theme of 2011 that all it does is import 2011. What am I missing?

    1. Matt Say says:

      Hmm are you using widget or template tag?

  47. Louis says:

    Thank you for the great plugin.
    I have one comment. The new css z-index rule interfered with other plugins. Had to manually correct it. Thought you should know.

  48. How can exclude certain categories from the drop-down generated by the widget?

    1. Matt Say says:

      Write category ids to exclude box: 0,17,48 etc.

  49. Joseph says:

    This plugin is wonderful. Thanks for all of your hard work!

  50. Matt Say says:

    For those who need less padding for dropdown arrows use this code

    ul.dropdown li.parent > a {
    padding-right: 16px;

    Put this code in your Custom CSS area on options page.

  51. Adrian says:

    I See You Made A Update To V1.8

    ” HoverIntent hotfix for WordPress 3.3 ”

    Don’t Know What That Meant, But When I Upgraded The Menu

    It Had A Bug, Before The Upgrade It Displayed The

    Categories Horizontally In A Straight Line, And With

    The Upgrade It Push The Last Category Below, Making A Second Line, With A Grey Background,

    So I Downgraded Back To V1.72 It Works Without Prob On WP 3.3 Too

    Also Above And Below The Dropdown There is A Space How Can I Remove The Spacing

    1. Matt Say says:

      Hello Adrian, v1.8 adds arrows next to dropdown parents. That’s why your menu got wider and items didn’t fit, so it made two rows. You can disable those arrows from the options page. For the spacing issue, i think you need a web designer that knows about CSS.

  52. Hugh Stewart says:

    Yay! Thank you so much.

  53. kristin says:

    I’m trying to use this on a WP 3.0 site using the Nom Nom child theme of Twenty Eleven.

    I have placed the widget in a sidebar and it appears, but it doesn’t appear in dropdown form. What I see is a block of links, all blocks themselves, aligned to the left and wrapping in the container. There is not dropdown/select box at all.

    Because the site is behind a firewall, I can’t post the link.. but I am very confused. Have you had any issues like this?

    1. Matt Say says:

      Maybe your theme CSS makes it appear like that. I can’t really answer this without seeing interpreted CSS code. Please make sure you have selected vertical option and you have subpages/categories under top level elements. Check troubleshooter here for more info.

  54. Joe says:

    How do you get the top level to actually not link anywhere? I’ve clicked the option under Settings->Dropdown Menu, but it’s still a clickable link. Is there something that I’m missing? I’ve gone over the video a couple times, but can’t seem to find anything that I’ve missed.

    1. Matt Say says:

      You have to use “Remove top level links” option, and it also requires your site to use default WordPress jquery.

      1. Joe says:

        How do I make sure that my site is using the default WordPress jquery?

        1. Matt Say says:

          Right click your site and select view source. Search for jquery.js. Path should be http://yoursite/wp-includes/js/jquery/jquery.js?ver=blah.

  55. David says:

    Dude, you are the man!! I watched your simple video for how it works. I’m looking forward to using the plugin!

  56. Ramtin says:

    Is it possible to make a parent category a menu item and then have the subcategories drop down from it? Right now on my site http://www.todaystechdeals.com I have several main categories (TVs, Cameras, etc…), but I want people to be able to hover over the category names and then have a list of sub-categories show up (for example, LED TVs, Plasma TVs, etc…). Thanks in advance!

    1. Matt Say says:

      Of course. Just select “Categories” from type selector on your options page/widget options. Categories dropdown display all categories as a dropdown.

      1. Ramtin says:

        Thanks, you are the man!!

  57. Alan says:

    great plugin, thank you.
    Can I disable more than just the top level? Say if I have 3 levels and I just want visitor to click the bottom level~

  58. Anirudh says:

    hmm… Great Plugin !

  59. Phil says:

    hi – great plugin – i was wondering how to do the following:

    1 need 2 menus – that both look different – a TOP MENU that uses the NVIDIA theme and has child pages in a drop menu below the parent item. But then a FOOTER menu that is a much simpler theme and also this footer menu needs to show the child pages as a drop menu that goes up above the parent item rather than dropping below the parent item.

    is this possible?

    1. Matt Say says:

      Current version themes work on CSS classes. Means all the dropdown menus on site will have same theme. If you know CSS you can easily create themes for two different menus as i did on this site. Just need to put wrapper item ids in front of the rules. I am going to re-edit themes soon and try to add multiple theme feature. I will add drop up feature with the next version.

  60. Hugh Stewart says:

    I may have asked before, but I can’t find the post — how can I add some indicator to Dropdown Menu to show that there are child items – such as ‘>>’ ?

    1. Hugh Stewart says:

      Still hoping to get a way to indicate that a menu item has children – anyone?

      1. Matt Say says:

        Just update your plugin and you will see an option “Show arrow pointers” on your options page. It should be enabled by default.

  61. Lisa Merriam says:

    How do you use your plug in with Atahualpa as the main horizontal navigation in the header? You can’t just drop it in a widget areas as the only options are sidebars.

  62. robb says:

    Thank you.
    That had worked. Though the only top menu that looks a bit good is the default WP one. I have been trying the glossy black one, and I see a white background now. I guess I I have to take something else inside?

  63. robb says:

    It seemed a nice solution.
    I tried to create a wordpress template from a template I had created myself as an asp site. I still have to fiddle a lot around.
    But if I add your menu, it takes over the basic stylesheet for a href’s, and it does not do anything with one of the basic styles I picked up.
    It is probably my lack of knowledge.

    1. Metin Saylan says:

      Hey Robb, It seems like you don’t have a wp_head() call in your header file. See reference here.

  64. matt@lynzaddy.com says:

    I’m having trouble with the plugin in IE. Looks great in everything else and I had my customizations working. I took it back to the basic Adobe theme and still it shows up vertically in IE. Thanks for any help.

    1. Metin Saylan says:

      Please rechek your dropdown menu settings and Save options. This often corrects the errors in the database. If it doesn’t work please send me a link to your site.

  65. Jyffe says:

    Hi, I managed to exclude. Is there a possibility to use multiple menus? I´m making multiple language web-site and I need two menus.

  66. Eric Marantan says:

    Is this plugin work in Google Chrome.. My site is working good at Mozilla and IE browser but in Chrome, doesn’t. Is there any configuration I should I do? Please help me.

    1. Metin Saylan says:

      I am using chrome too and i have no problems viewing shailan.com. Can you send me a link please.

  67. amanda@wraycodesign.com says:

    Hi, I just emailed about the vertical issue with the logout menu item and it was fixed after I downloaded your update. Thanks!

  68. jeroenpvos@gmail.com says:

    looking into this plugin, does it ‘only’ supports one single menu? I have two menu’s in header I need dropdowns for.

    1. Metin Saylan says:

      Actually if you have widget areas on your header, you can use as many times as you like.

  69. piethalberstadt@gmail.com says:

    applying the update and all the navigation i spent so long doing disappeared. Re saving the menu restored everything. Dicey there for a while.

  70. martin.dvorak@olomouc.cz says:

    Try this – go to the plugin settings, check the vertical option, save, uncheck vertical, save, see if it helps. For me it worked – however there’s a newer version of the plugin – quoting the author’s post on FB:

    “With the 1.7 release of dropdown menu widget, i changed the whole options page interface. Apparently i forgot to edit the template tag support for the new interface, that’s why sites using the template tag were displaying vertical menus instead of horizontal. I fixed this issue with 1.7.1 version. Please update your plugin now to the latest version. Sorry for the inconvenience.”

  71. Wendy says:

    I updated dropdown menu widget because there was a flag that there was an update available version 1.7.. Well, I did the update and it messed up my navigation. I did a copy and paste of my saved css file and it made my menu in vertical opposed to horizontal. I really like your menu… i just wish your update would not affect my menu this way.

    1. Metin Saylan says:

      @zed, @mrinal, @christian and @wendy, those issues were caused by a settings interface error. I fixed it in 1.7.2, hope that it solved your problems. Thanks for the report.

  72. Christian says:

    Thanks for this great plugin!

    Regarding http://www.casid.dk: Do you have any idea why the dropdown is shown directly to the right of the top level menu/link – not below it? And why the submenus are arranged vertical in IE, but horizontal on Chrome and FF?

    Thanks a lot for any advice you can give. It will be much appricated!
    Best regards, Christian from Denmark

  73. I was using old version. Everything was working fine. As soon as I updated it today; all menus turned to be Vertical and also the settings were acting opposite. When I don’t want it to show HOME, NO Vertical, NO Login Logout – It is still showing.
    I think problem is with WordPress 3.2? I put old plugin files back (from backup) it came to normal.

  74. zed says:

    I’ve just upgraded into 1,7 version but now it changes into vertical menu, I try to uncheck vertical menu option but it still shows vertical menu. How can I get it back to horizontal menu?

  75. Muano says:

    Hi, I have a custom menu as well as your menu on one page, but the drop-down functionality has suddenly stopped working, I tried removing all the “overflow:hidden;” in my theme’s css but it still didn’t work. Can you please help me?

      1. Muano says:

        Ok, thanks it worked.

  76. Dave says:

    Thanks for a great plug.
    Quetions – How do i change the side direction of the 3rd degree popup menu (means the popup from the sub menu) . Now it goes to the right, i would like it to open on the left.

    1. Metin Saylan says:

      You can only achieve this using CSS. It depends on your current site theme but it should be something like
      ul.dropdown ul ul { right:99%; left:auto; }

  77. shailan says:

    I advice editing your stylesheets, ‘cus if you edit plugin files, your edits will be gone with the next update. Always do customizations on your theme files. Editing plugins is not a solution really.

  78. Drew says:

    Hi, I have found the file but unsure of what to do next. Should I edit the CSS and add a new ‘parent’ class, and/or edit the .js file itself? Perhaps you could nudge me along just one step further down the line.

    Thank you.

  79. Drew says:

    Sorry I was unsure of how to add the code for the brackets… Meant to say “… It was recommended to me to add a style to the <a> rather than the <li> tag since there is already a background image for the <li> .

    Hope that makes more sense! Thanks for your plugin it really helped me out!

    1. shailan says:

      Hello Drew, parent CSS class added to list elements, using jQuery in the include.js under JS folder. I hope that helps.

  80. Drew says:

    Thanks for the tut on using with WP3.0 menu, got it working nicely.

    I have a question: I would like to add a style element to parent pages only (a little arrow indicating sub-menu items on hover) but I am unable to find out where the parent class is being created!

    It was recommended to me to add a style to the rather than the since there is already a background image there. But I can’t find out where this is for parent items! I’m starting with the ‘adobe’ theme if that helps!

    Thanks that would be so amazing to figure this out:

    http://drewclifton.com/clients/northern-computer/ to see results so far.

    Thanks again.

  81. Hi Shailan,

    Great widget you have here. Can I suggest something? Can you give an option for a hover or a click option. Sometimes automatically dropping the menu when the mouse hovers over it may pose problems. I prefer it to let the user click on the menu before it drops down. Thank you and hope to get a favorable reply.

      Hey Joseph, dropdown after click needs a second element in the link element. With default dropdown, links are generated by wordpress. I may add this option on a later version, but currently i have no free time.

  82. Hello,

    thanks for a great plugin. I have a question – Remove links from top levels doesn’t seem to work for me (in any site that I’ve used the plugin at). Any clue?

    1. I have found a workaround – I have replaced the main menu items with submenus with Custom links, linking to #

    2. shailan says:

      Maybe your footer.php lacks a <?php wp_footer(); ?> call? This is necessary for many plugins to work.

  83. Joe says:

    I am using this script, its great! I am making a photo gallery though and want to incorporate my WP theme (good so far) and the nav into that page. Is there an include statement or anything that I can use to have the Nav show in the photo gallery as well? I have it copied and pasted right now, but if a page is changed or a new is added, it’ll need to be changed by hand. Any suggestions?
    Thanks, and good job!

    i am trying exclude one category and all its subcategories from menu.
    i have suppy Main category id in menu Exclusion text box…but it does not work..

    any idea?

    1. shailan says:

      Just tested it on my test server, and it works perfect.
      Please check that you got the correct id.

      Are you using widget or the function?

  85. zucram says:

    Hi! i’m trying again since the last one doesn’t seem to work!
    Your plugin seems to be exactly what i want. However the menu displays vertical in all browsers except for Chrome even though the vertical option is not selected. How do i fix this?

    1. shailan says:

      Hello Marcus, This is possibly caused by your theme css. Check your css codes.

  86. Drew says:

    Hi does this menu work with the WordPress 3.0 menu system? I recently updated my theme to include WP3.0 menus, but the AWESOME Shailan dropdown menu seems to still be pulling all of the pages by default into the menu.

    Let me know if there is a tutorial for this or if it’s possible!

    So many thanks, this plugin helped me so much.

      1. Drew says:

        Thanks I’ll have a look :)

  87. Stuart says:

    Just updated to 1.6.3 and don’t know if this is a feature or a bug, but I had to upload a saved version of my shailan-dropdown.css file. The update over-wrote my customisation.

    1. shailan says:

      Hello Stuart, I think i gotta add this to FAQ.
      When you update a plugin, wordpress delete all files in the plugin folder. So if you change a file in the plugin folder it is deleted and replaced by the update. This is why i added many other options for customizations.

      I will write a short tutorial about that soon.

  88. Alexander says:

    Have a problem: your great menu (really fantastic, it’s what I looking for!) dropdowns bottom, hiding other categories. How to make vertical menu dropdown to the left?

    I share my site at test.pushken.com.ua, problem menu in bottom-right conner.

  89. Muano says:

    Hi, been using your plugin for some time now and its always been awesome. I was wondering, is there a way to display two separate menus on one page? I’ve made a custom menu on wordpress. but the plugin only allows me to use one menu at a time

  90. Igor says:

    Hi great plugin, though ‘am having the same problem as Joe, trying to fetch different menu on multilingual theme with no luck, Menu Type in Template Tag Options overwrites it, any workarounds?

  91. ale says:

    thanks a lot! Your plugin is wonderful! :)

  92. hilary says:

    Hi shailan,

    I was wondering if there was a way to modify either the CSS or php so that the dropdown menu would fit in a sidebar, i.e., so that categories would be stacked vertically and subcategories drop down from the categories, expanding the entire category menu. I thought that was what was meant by a vertical arrangement, but it doesn’t seem to be working for me.

    I’d appreciate any suggestions!

    1. shailan says:

      Hmm, that is called an accordion menu. I can write a custom plugin for that, but dropdown menu doesn’t display that way.

  93. Shell says:

    Your plugin is wonderful and seamless – There is just one style that I cannot seem to locate: The color of the line between the menu items. Where is that in the CSS?

    Thanks so much!

    1. shailan says:

      This depends on which theme you are using. Every theme has a different css. Check themes folder under the plugin directory.

  94. pri says:

    hey matt,
    thanks for such a fantastic plug-in.
    But as per my need i want a small change in this. I want the sub menu’s to remain visible as it is, like for e.g. if i am on a particular page then the sub-menu to which this page belong should show up on load without hovering over on parent menu. i had managed to do this using jquery, but problem is when i again hover over the same sub menu and when mouseout or mouseleave event occurs the sub-menu disappears. What i want is, firstly sub-menu should not disappear on mouseOut or mouseLeave event when we are on the same page. Secondly, it should only fadeOut when i hover over some other parent-menu.
    Can you please suggest where could i make these changes?

  96. Joe says:

    I’ve copied your code to use the style.css file for setting the overall look of the menu, but it is taking it from the actual css for the rest of the site, such as a a:hover etc.

    If you take a look at my site at http://yournews.moonworks.co you’ll see the problem. There are links on the blue menu bar, it is the same color as my normal links on the site. If you hover on the left of the menu, you will see the two items there.

    1. shailan says:

      Replace .shailan-dropdown-menu with the container elements id. For example in your case it is <div id="menu">.
      So you need to replace .shailan-dropdown-menu with #menu in the CSS code.

      1. Joe says:

        Thanks, that did the job.

        I’m getting there :)

  97. Ricardo says:

    How do you make the width of the drop down menu the same? Currently have drop down on my new site and the width is proportionate with the number of letters in the word. Want to have it all one uniform size.

    1. shailan says:

      Hello Ricardo,

      Your submenu li elements are floated, thats why links shrink. Otherwise display:block; makes an element take all width it can.

      Just add this code to your stylesheet:

      ul.dropdown li ul li {
        float: none;
  98. Lawrence says:

    Having a problem with the most recent update to the plugin. The submenus under “Services” are hidden behind the main container of the page (in FF). In Safari, the submenus are displaying below “Services” and transparent. ? Also is there a way to have square corners instead of rounded ones?

    Thanks for your help!

    1. shailan says:

      I am going to fix this error with vertical in the next version.
      Here is how to fix that:

      ul.dropdown-vertical li{ display:block; }

      You need some style fixes too:

      ul.dropdown-vertical ul { background:#fff; padding:0; }
      ul.dropdown-vertical ul li a{ text-align:left; }
  99. Toren says:

    Any word on getting the dropdown to show up in front of the image in IE8?

    1. shailan says:

      Actually, I don’t give support for IE. IE is a browser that causes a lot of problems for designers.
      Unfortunately its the fate of Windows users.
      However, your problem may be a flash problem.
      You need to use wmode=”opaque” or wmode=”transparent” for your flash implementations, so it will obey z-index rules.

      1. shailan says:

        It is <param name=”wmode” value=”opaque”> for <object> code.

  100. Joe says:

    I’d like to sue the php option for adding the menu:

    However, I can’t seem to figure out what I need to add to select a specific wp3 menu.

    1. shailan says:

      Hello Joe,
      You should give nav menu id as type like this:

      <?php shailan_dropdown_menu( array( 'type' => 'navmenu_233' ) ); ?>

      You can see menu id on your browser status bar like “menu=233″, when you hover Delete Menu link.

      1. Joe says:

        Thanks, but that doesn’t weant to play nicely.

        I’ve added it as navmenu_3 (it is menu=3 when hovering), but it just shows the sample page, not what I have set up in the wp3 menus section.

        At some point in the future, would it be possible to use the menu title? That way users could just add that title for a menu and themes could be passed around without worry :)

        1. shailan says:

          Hmm, I just checked and Template tag options overwrite this setting. So if you have another menu selected in your Options page -> Template tag options that will overwrite it. I will fix that issue in the next version.

  101. Toren says:

    Perfect fix! This is a great plugin.
    One final issue though. Everything works great in Firefox and Safari on the mac side. However in IE8 and firefox on the windows side the dropdown falls behind the slideshow just below it. Your help is greatly appreciated.

  102. Joe says:

    I’m having trouble with the width of my sub-menus.

    I’d like the whole sub-menu to be the same width, but it is making it just the width of each item.

    You can see what I mean by hovering over the ‘Writers Corner’ menu on my site:

    1. Joe says:

      All sorted on this now :)

  103. Paul says:

    Thanks for the great plugin!

    Bit of a WP novice here. I’ve got the plugin working for the nav menu, but instead of showing the menus in Appearance > Menus as the headings, and then the menu content as the dropdown, it is only allowing me to select one of the menus and then showing the menu content as the actual menus – no dropdowns. Any suggestions as to what might be wrong?

  104. Toren says:

    Im almost there. But need your help. The nav element that has the dropdown is being pushed up by the submenu. so the one element is higher than the rest of the nav elements. How can I fix this?

    1. shailan says:

      Add this to your custom css area:

      ul.dropdown .parent a { display: block; }

      I will fix that issue with the next release.

    2. shailan says:

      And this fixes the color:

      ul.dropdown a:link, ul.dropdown a:visited, ul.dropdown li, ul.dropdown li a {
           color: #736357;
  105. I’m using your drop down menu and have gotten it almost perfect for my project… the only problem is when the menu drops down, it drops to the far left… then on mouse out, shows up right under the top level button like it should, for a split second…

    The site is on an internal dev server… but I may be able to provide some screen captures of what I’m talking about?

    Thanks in advance.

    1. shailan says:

      Well, I can’t help you if i can’t see the problem.
      A screenshot won’t work.

      Can it be because you’ve put dropdown in a div that is already styled in your stylesheet css. (like <div id="nav" ... > OR <div clas="menu" ... >
      Most common problems are caused by CSS overwrites.

      1. Thanks. I’ll check it out…

  106. Joe says:

    Thanks, I’ll give that a go.

    I’m also discoverign how easy it is to add the css to the style.css file.

  107. Joe says:

    If I wanted to add my own menu theme, how would I set it up? I’ve tried copying and renaming, but the new theme doesn’t show up in the list of themes in the plugin.

    1. shailan says:

      Just copy a theme css to your theme folder and name it as dropdown.css
      plugin will add it to the bottom of the theme selector.

  108. Tallulah says:

    I’m having the same problem as Bill above: the submenus appear but give the user no time at all to click on them before they disappear. What can be done?

    1. shailan says:

      You have to check padding & margins of navigation elements. This is generally caused by putting dropdown in an already styled navigation div. (like id=”nav”)

      1. Tallulah says:

        Well, whaddya know, that’s what I have going on. :) Although weirdly, it stopped having that problem like 5 minutes after I left the message here. But if it comes back, I’ll know how to fix it. Thanks!

  109. Julie Perez says:

    Hi Shailan – I just love your plugin. It works great on my site. Is there anyway to avoid seeing the index page if a category only has one post?

    I use the redirect on some of my menu’s but my cat item Historical Properties… has quite a few, and to create a category-x.php file for each one would be tedious.

    Not sure if you can help me.

  110. Bill says:

    Hi Matt

    Firstly, thanks for a very nice menu plugin. Had it running for over a week now but have spotted a problem on our site in IE (all other browsers fine).

    When in the ‘Stock’ section of our site, the links don’t appear on the bar, or they flash up very quickly, then disappear. Any advice gratefully received.

    Best regards

  111. Nanda says:

    After the update I’ve been having problems with submenus disappearing (they appear but disappear once your cursor gets near it). This only happens in the first submenu in a menu bar, so if there’s more than one submenu, the rest shows up properly.

    Some skins do appear to work: None, Custom CSS, Color Scheme, Simple White, WordPress Default and the Flickr theme.

    I’ve tried this in both Firefox and Chrome.

    I hope there’s a fix for this, because I use the Nvidia skin for my site. :)

    1. shailan says:

      Hello Nanda, this is probably some CSS mistake in your site.
      I can’t fix it if i can’t see the problem on your site.
      Either send me a demo link or just contact me when your site is alive.

  112. Matt says:

    I am having trouble with your latest version. The previous version that I had worked fine but this version makes the vertical menu slide like crazy. Is there a way I can get the last version from you where the submenu on the vertical menu appears to the right and doesn’t slide up and down?

  113. Hi shailan,
    I have added Dropdown Menu Widget in Deep blue wordpress theme and I want to show dropdown category.When I add it into header dropdown menu looks different in different browser.

    How to solve this issue??

  114. Jim says:

    Hi! I would like to denote when a menu item has one or more submenus beneath it by displaying an image on the “parent” menu item. Is this possible with your awesome plugin?

    1. shailan says:

      Hello Jim,

      This can be done using this simple CSS code:

      ul.dropdown li.parent a{ /* Put an arrow next to parent elements */
        background: #222222 url("__URL_TO_ARROW_IMAGE__") 95% 5px no-repeat;
      ul.dropdown li.parent li a{ background: #222222; } /* Needed for clearing arrows from all sub elements under parent class li */

      Those styling classes are added with jQuery so there may be a slight delay on appearance.

  115. San Diego DJ says:

    Correction: It is incorrect under Chrome too.

    1. shailan says:

      Your stylesheet #nav rules overwrite the dropdown rules. Remove float:left from #nav li{} element on line 307.

      1. San Diego DJ says:

        Thanks! You are good. With support like this, your app will forever be recommended by me!

  116. San Diego DJ says:

    Great plugin, but I’m running into a weird issue. Is it supposed to work on Safari? My menu is horizontal with vertical submenus in Firefox/IE/Chrome, but in Safari it is horizontal with a horizontal submenu that appears directly under the main menu. http://www.sandiegocreativemusicdjs.com if you want to take a look.

  117. Shelly K. says:

    Thank you for the wonderful Drop Down menu. Excellent Looks, Customization tools, interface. Intuitive and nice. Now I’m using Weaver, how do I enter the line

    as a shortcode so it shows up below the header?
    Thank you kindly for sharing your knowledge.

    1. shailan says:

      Hello Shelly, you can use <?php shailan_dropdown_menu(); ?> to display the menu. I am going to enable shortcode versions with the next release.

  118. Sebastian Sauer says:

    I had to change your plugin (unobtrusive js/ prevent multiple anim-Handlers-registration).

    So heres a fix I want to share back: http://pastie.org/1517900

    best regards

    1. shailan says:

      Hello Sebastian, why did you need this fix?

  119. Hi,
    I have added Dropdown Menu Widget in Deep blue wordpress theme and I want to show dropdown category.My question is where to find widget shailan-dropdown-menu??

    1. shailan says:

      On the widgets page?

  120. jzzl says:

    Hey Shailan, great plugin! Have loved using it and my client who is not tech savvy feels like an old pro when adding new pages.

    However, I just downloaded the new update and my vertical flyouts now drop straight down covering the link below instead of stairstepping to the right as they did in the past.

    Where do I look to fix this.

    Thanks for designing a great plugin making my life so much easier.

    1. shailan says:

      Hello Jzzl, just add this code to custom css area:

      ul.dropdown-vertical li { display: block; }

      I am going to test vertical menus and fix that issue asap.
      Thanks for reporting the issue.

      1. jzzl says:

        Thanks so much for your rapid attention to this matter. It works perfectly now.

      2. Brian says:

        My vertical menu also “broke” after updating it but that code fixed it. Thanks.

  121. Jonathan says:

    Super happy about the effects on the latest version. Thanks man.

    1. shailan says:

      I’m glad you liked it Jonathan. It was something i wanna do for a long time.

  122. Larry says:

    Hi there Shailan, just wondering why your dropdown menu isn’t compatible with IE8/IE7 ? It worked like a charm with other browsers except for those two.

    How would i possible fix this issue?

    1. shailan says:

      Hello Larry, I am using dropdown menu widget on my site too. And i see no errors in IE8.

  123. Hi. I’m using this great plugin on our association homepage. I’m trying to wash my html, but I get this errorwhen I use html validation
    there is no attribute “align”
    …ailan-dropdown-wrapper-3″ ><div align="left" class="dropdown-horizontal-contai…
    Where can I remove this option in your code

    Thanks for a great plugin

    1. shailan says:

      That align is needed for alignments. It is located in shailan.DropDownMenu.php. Search for $dropdown_open.

      I am going to release a new version tomorrow. You may want to do this fix after update. There will be jQuery animations in next version.

  124. Hi. I’m using this great plugin on our association homepage. I’m trying to wash my html, but I get this error:
    there is no attribute “align”

  125. Muano says:

    Hi, just installed your plugin but the submenu doesn’t show up regardless of where I place the menu

    1. shailan says:

      Send me a link to your site please.

        1. shailan says:

          Remove all overflow:hidden; rules from your stylesheet line 130 and 138:

          .widget { clear:both; overflow:hidden; height:100%; margin:0px 0px 20px 0px;}
          .widget ul li { overflow:hidden; height:100%; line-height:1.4em; padding:0px 0px 0px 0px;   margin:0;   }

          This should solve your problem.

          1. Muano says:

            Awesome! thanks its working now. Must say this is indeed an awesome plugin especially when its working properly. My boss has been on my neck about geting a sleek drop-down and I think this is it

        2. shailan says:

          Also you should disable “Wrap long menu items” under advanced options to display long text in one line (nowrap).

          1. Muano says:

            Lol, that was gona be my next question after fiddling with the internal css and messing things up. Thanx a million!

          2. shailan says:

            Your welcome :)

  126. Matt says:

    Hi Shailan,

    I updated to latest version of the Dropdown Menu Widget plugin and now I’m having some pretty major display errors. I wish I could tell you the reason, but it is well beyond my level of expertise.

    Do you have any older versions of the plugin still available to download?

    1. shailan says:

      You can download older versions of the plugin here. However i recommend fixing the css according to latest version. If you use an old version you won’t be able to get features that will come with the next versions.

  127. Peter says:

    Hi Shailan
    Very basic question! I am completely new to this and managed to get the plugin up and running smoothly. wonderful experience I might add! But I have one problem, I cant get my Home page to reflect on the menu options.

  128. Joe says:

    With all these people craeting their own CSS, ity would be good if you could have an area on your site where it could be shared…

  129. Jonathan says:

    I got this working well, with a menu that has totally custom css. One formatting concern that I have is my main menu items are all light green and then have a dark green background when they are the current page or when you hover over them. The dropdown background matches this dark green color, but when you run the cursor over the dropdown menu the main menu item reverts to its original background. It’s obvious why it does that, I just don’t want it to. Can you suggest any fixes?

    Also, is there any way to implement a slight fade in with your plugin? That’s the reason I was originally looking for a jquery dropdown.

    Thanks again.

    1. shailan says:

      Hello Jonathan, can you send me a link to your site. Otherwise it’s impossible for me to solve it.
      I am thinking of enabling jquery fadeIn in the future releases. But for now it’s only CSS. You can however try my Superfish Dropdown Menu, which is nearly same, that uses jquery superfish plugin to animate the menu. Though it doesn’t come with ready to use themes.

      1. Jonathan says:

        Hey Shailan,

        The site isn’t live. I’ll remove the password protection for today, but its all under construction. The address is http://www.plantmedicineguides.com. It looks like the other plugin doesn’t have your backend control features like this one does. The problem I would run into with that is whether or not I can implement a menu that I’ve created using the wordpress menus tool. I want to use that because not all my pages are main items.

      2. Jonathan says:

        Fixed the first part. It was a simple matter of switching the css so that the background tag changed in li:hover rather than li > a:hover. The dropdown list is created inside the parent list item.

        I’d really like to use the fade in addition to this plugin when you get it implemented.

  130. Jonathon says:

    Hi shailan,
    Thanks for the plug-in – really like it, but I’m stuck on trying to customize one last item.

    I’m using custom CSS and getting odd differences in padding between the roll-over state and current / active state? As if something else is over-riding once a menu option is selected.

    I started with greyscale theme – I added a new version to the options list, then customized that new theme choice – but stripped it down a lot.

    My goal would be that the roll-over state remains just as it is once that option gets selected, but right now, it shifts to removing about 8 px from each side and does this even when trying to compensate by adjusting the padding in the active state.

    Here is the code I’m trying to use. Thanks for your thoughts.

    @charset “UTF-8″;

    /** Container */
    .shailan-dropdown-menu .dropdown-horizontal-container{ margin-top:3px;height:42px;background:#422655 url(‘images/navbar-bg.png’) repeat-x top; }

    ul.dropdown li { color: #d3c9d9;text-align:center;background:#422655;font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;margin:0px;padding:0 7px;}

    /** Hover effect */
    ul.dropdown li:hover { height:33px;background:#715c80;}

    /** Link colors */
    ul.dropdown a:link, ul.dropdown a:visited { color: #d3c9d9;text-decoration: none; display:block; }
    ul.dropdown a:hover { color: #ffffff;background:#715c80; }
    ul.dropdown a:active { color: #ffffff;background:#715c80; }

    /** Sub menus */
    ul.dropdown ul {}
    ul.dropdown ul li {}

    /** Current menu item */
    li.current-cat a, li.current_page_item a, li.current-menu-item a,
    li.current-cat a:link, li.current_page_item a:link, li.current-menu-item a:link,
    li.current-cat a:visited, li.current_page_item a:visited, li.current-menu-item a:visited{ height:25px;color: #ffffff;background:#715c80;}

    /** Not current fix */
    li.current_page_item ul a, li.current_page_item ul a:visited, li.current_page_item ul a:link { height:25px;color: #d3c9d9;background:#422655; }

  131. Jonathan says:

    Hi there,

    I tried this out but wondering why I need to choose from a checkbox list of what to display. Why can’t it draw the items (and their subcategories) from where I’ve organized them already under Appearance > Menus in the WordPress Admin.

  132. Nanda says:

    Is it possible to customise the CSS for submenus? I’d love to use a smaller font for the submenus.

    I’d also like to know which IDs or classes I should use in the custom CSS text field, to customise my menu.

    Thanks for this wonderful plugin!

    1. shailan says:

      Sure it is possible. Just use this simple template in your custom css template:

      ul.dropdown li a {  /* Top level menu links*/
       padding:3px 5px 3px 5px; /* Top Right Bottom Left */
       font-size: 16px;
      ul.dropdown ul li a{ /* Second level & sub levels menu links */
        padding: 3px; /* 3px for all */
        font-size: 12px;
      ul.dropdown ul ul li a { /* Third level & subs levels */ } /* Goes like this */

      This should do.

  133. Is it possible to add an option for the custom links to enable target settings for the links? I want to have one item, pointing to the photogallery opening a new window for it.

  134. Noemi says:

    Hy there. I just found your plugin. and I’m also new to blogging. Can you please explain to me how do I have to install the plugin, because I can find the /wp-content/plugins/ directory. Where do I have to first on my blog page? Thank you and sorry for being so dumb about this! :P

  135. Ed Roche says:

    Love the Drop-Down Widget but I am seeing one issue. After selecting the main menu option the submenus drop down but the first button of the sub-menu does not “light up” but the ones to follow do. I tried making more space between the main menu and the drop down list but that didn’t do it. Any ides? You can take a look @ my-test-web.com.

    1. shailan says:

      Hello Ed, here is the problem:

       ul.dropdown ul li.first-child{ border:0px; }

      please remove this line and it should work as expected ;)

  136. Matthew says:

    Awesome! Thanks.

  137. Matthew says:

    Menu does not work in IE8 Compatibility view.
    The menu’s work great in Firefox and Chrome. However in IE8 Compatibility view, the menu overlaps up to the top of the page.

    I’ve seen a couple people post about the issue.. but so far no fix. Anyone fix this issue?

    1. shailan says:

      I will fix that issue with the next release within a week. Since IE doesn’t support many tricks used in this css it has bugs. I will fix it with a script in the next version.

  138. Joe says:

    I’ve added the menu directly into my theme using , but how do I get it to use a WP3 menu?

    1. Joe says:

      The message above should have had the php code in it, but it didn’t show up. I used the php code in the readme file.

  139. Joe says:

    If I want to put a section into my code to use this plugin if it is activated, but not if it isn’t, how would I do that?

    Sorry, that sounds confusing.

    What I mean, is how would I create an if/else section to the code, depending on whether the plugin is activated or not?

    1. shailan says:

      You can do this by using function_exists check. Here is a sample:

      < ?php if(function_exists('shailan_dropdown_menu')){
      } else {

      This code will display dropdown if it is enabled. Otherwise it will display the first wordpress navigation menu.

      I hope that helps.

      1. Joe says:

        Thanks, I’ll give that a go :)

  140. sm says:

    hey i am trying to use this plugin for vertical navigation and want the dynamic drop down to open off the side…. what needs to be changed to make this work…. It currently shifts the navigation down

    1. shailan says:

      Well it is supposed to open to the side not shift down. It may be a css problem.

  141. Joe says:

    It’s ok, I just read Peter’s comment, and changed overflow to visible.

  142. Joe says:

    Great plugin, the answer to my wp3 sub-menu woes. Thabnk you.

    I’m trying to get a simple horizontal menu with vertical sub-menu, but am having a bit of a problem.

    I have two sub-menus in the uncategrized section of the menu and they show up fine when the sub-menu is the default horizontal, but only the first sub-menu shows up if I try to make it vertical (you can see this on my test site at http://blank.wp3.co), and that is using the nvidia css example.

    Is this a problem of showing more than one sub-menu vertically or, as I suspect, it won’t go past the end of the header?

    I removed height from the header, but that doesn’t help at all.

  143. D Mang says:

    The drop down menu works great except that on my video page the drop menu disappears behind the flash object. Is there an easy fix for this problem?

  144. Matthew says:

    I am using the drop down menu and it appears the way I want it to look in FFox but the font is huge and doesn’t appear where I want it to in IE. Any suggestions? I am very new to WP and CSS so please be kind ;-)

  145. faze tari says:

    I solved this plugin and now it’s working on my blog.
    How can I change the width because it-s larget than the theme page?

  146. Piet says:

    Great Plugin. I have selected the option to add Login and Registration to the menu bar, that function does not show up when the shortcode is placed in the header. That function does work when the widget in the sidebar. Please help.

  147. siouxsie says:

    Also I put any css additions/customization right in my style sheet. Seemed easier than pasting into the plug-in window. Could that be it?

  148. KarmaTiger says:

    Usually your updates break any customization to the .css I’ve made, and I have to re-upload the .css file I’m using to make the widget look like it’s part of my site.

    This latest update however broke EVERYTHING. The menu didn’t show up at all.

    1. shailan says:

      You are not supposed to change any plugin files. If you do so you changes will be gone everytime you update the plugin.

      I will add an option to use “dropdown-custom.css” in your wordpress theme folder so you won’t lose your customizations.

      You can use Custom CSS area for now.

  149. Reggie says:

    I also just added a sub-page to test and see how it looks. How can the code be adjusted so that the box around the subpage link doesn’t show. I want it to where just the text comes down with the without the white line around the box and the color in the box is the lighter color not the dark black, and have the text of the subpage link lined up on the left with the main page. I emailed you directly the other day. Thanks again for your help. The plugin is a great product.

    1. shailan says:

      I advice you use Color Scheme if you have updated to 1.5.6beta. So you can use a simple color scheme with black & red.

  150. Liz says:

    Loving the drop down menu. I’m still having problems with it displaying incorrectly in IE, is there any way to fix this? Thanks!

    Hi Matt,

    I really like your plugin, but now I have a MAJOR problem.
    Today I changed the permalink of my wordpress blog, installed a redirection plugin and suddenly your dropdown menu disappeared.

    For hours I´m now trying to get the menu back, but I just can´t get it to work.
    The blog comes up with an error in line 379 and this line has ” wp_nav_menu($menu_args); ” in it. I´m running wp 3.01.

    Can you please help me? What can I do to solve this problem and get your dropdown menu back in place?

    Thanks in advance!

  155. r0bal says:

    Hi! is there possibility to create Archives dropdown in this menu?

    1. shailan says:

      I am going to add a simple php hook to enable adding items to the menu in the future versions. If you are using “pages” as menu type you can use this feature now. Add this simple code to your functions.php file and it will add archives at the end of dropdown menu:

      function add_archives(){
      	$args = array();
      	echo '<li><a href="#" rel="nofollow">Archives</a><ul>';
      	wp_get_archives( $args );
      	echo '</ul></li>';
      } add_action('dropdown_list_after', 'add_archives');
      1. r0bal says:

        It doesn’t seem to work… but don’t know any php :)

      2. r0bal says:

        MAN! this new update roxxxx! Archives are now great! THX!

        1. shailan says:

          Thanks rObal, it is based on your feedback ;)

          1. r0bal says:

            another nice thing would be to have an ability of changing the order of all components (pages, links, archives etc.) :)

      Thanks for pointing out this problem. I fixed it on source code now. Will be available with the next release.

  157. Luis says:

    Hi! I’ve just installed your plugin, with the intention of getting a horizontal menu bar under the header, but can’t get the options page to “catch” my preferences. The “Save changes” button simply reloads the page with default values. I’m using WP 3.01 with kubrick theme. Any hint on what could be wrong would be appreciated. Many thanks for your plugin anyway.

  158. Jae says:

    Hi, I’m having troubles with my navigation bar. :( It freezes every time I navigate my site so I searched for this plugin. But this plug in wouldnt work on my template. what should I do? :(

    1. Matt Say says:

      Hello Jae, the site you gave is not a wordpress site.
      Can you provide a link to your wordpress site?

  159. David Monteiro says:

    I would like to know if it is possible to make a dropdown menu that only appears in some pages.

    1. Matt Say says:

      You can easily accomplish this using wordpress custom page templates.
      thanks for your comment.

  160. Marcel says:

    Hi Matt,

    A super plugin! Very nice. I’m using the latest version of your plugin an WP, I got one problem, I can’t save anything within the Menu Options. If I select a theme and click save, it doesn’t save my settings. Hope you can help me.

  161. lei caine says:

    I have the same plugin as well, it’s the new 1.5.5 I think. But I having an issue to where when I place the in my template, my dropdown menu appears, however, my original menu stays up there too….How to I fix this?

    1. Matt Say says:

      I think you forgot to remove original menu code from the file you edited. Dropdown menu won’t remove your original menu. You need to remove your menu from your theme header file yourself. Simply open header.php and look for anything looks like a menu. Then remove those codes from the file.

  162. KarmaTiger says:

    I’ve created a new theme, with files in a folder similar to the structure of Adobe and other included folder-stored themes.

    However, when I upload the new theme folder via FTP into the Themes folder alongside the included ones, it still doesn’t come up as an option in the drop-down list for Themes under settings for this plugin.

    How can I get the plugin to recognize a newly created theme, rather than just CSS-bash an existing theme folder and leaving the original folder title intact? Doing it the 2nd way means everything gets overwritten every time I update the plugin.

    1. Matt Say says:

      I’ve added a custom css field on the options page. You can paste content of this file to that Custom CSS area. And it will never be overwritten again.

      Also you can always paste it at the end of your own theme stylesheet and select None from dropdown menu theme. This way even though the plugin changes your theme will still remain.

      I don’t recommend using plugin folders or files for customization, since they may change in time.

      Thanks for your feedback.

      1. KarmaTiger says:

        thanks – but calling CSS then ignoring that CSS in favour of other CSS stuffed in a custom box through settings isn’t very elegant.

        As for making my own CSS sheet and selecting none, I’m using images and 2 CSS sheets so it isn’t as simple as making one CSS sheet and sticking it somewhere – folders keep things neat. Since I’m making a theme folder, I may as well store it with the other theme folders for this plugin, otherwise I’m scattering things all over the place.

        Hence my question of how can I get the plugin to recognize a new theme – which didn’t really get answered.

        1. Matt Say says:

          Well plugin folders are for plugin developers.
          If you use them to store your files they will be deleted everytime you update the plugin.

          Use this simple steps for your css.
          1. Put your files under your theme folder.
          2. Put this simple import code on TOP of your stylesheet.css to import them:

          @import url(my-dropdown-menu.css);

          3. Select “None” from dropdown menu theme.

          This way your css will be safe.
          I am not planning to recognize css files in the plugin folder.

  163. Joanna says:

    Hello, I’m currently using the ‘shiny black’ drop down menu theme (from Shailan) for the website im helping to design: UWDECA Website (http://uwdeca.com).

    Though it looks wonderful in Firefox (which most of the other members have been using) – when used in internet explorer each menu item spans horizontally and stacks on top of one another.

    Is there a way to fix this problem? Was it that I had not installed it right, or was it an error with this version of the plugin (1.5.3)? (not that I don’t love the plugin, because I do…it’s just a little annoying since sponsors generally use IE as their browsers at work).

    Thank you!

  164. Mani says:

    Hello, this plugin is great, but I am having an issue with this plugin.

    It doesn’t appear on the home page or any parent pages, infact the only page it appears on is the page of a particular post and no where else, could you please let me know on how to fix that?

    And the settings don’t ever change, like when I change the color or anything else in its settings page, and after I click on save, all it does is just refresh the page and switch to the original selections.

    Any help will be greatly appreciated.

  165. Kristin A says:

    Hello there – thank you for a great plugin! One of the links on my menu needs to be hard-coded as a static link to an external website (rather than to an interior wordpress page on my site). Is there a way to do that with your plug in? Thank you!

    1. Matt Say says:

      Hello Kristin, yes there is a way to do that. First you need to upgrade your wordpress to version 3.0. Then you can create a custom menu from Appearance > Menus section comes with WP3. After you create the custom menu it will be visible in the selector of dropdown widget with the name you created. This way it will use custom menu you just created. Custom menus are a great way to create navigation menus since editing is easier than hard coded menus. If you can’t update wordpress you can also create a fake page and then use “Page links to” plugin to redirect this page to another site. Thanks for the feedback.

  166. Tracy says:

    Hi and thank you for this plugin.
    I am having some trouble with getting it to work properly; the drop down item shows up when you hover over the parent item, however the child item disappears as you go to click it.
    Also it appears the css adds spacing to the right of the parent item when hovering.. can you help? Thanks.

    1. Matt Say says:

      Hello Tracy, it seems you modified padding and margin values for default dropdown core CSS file. Also you are using div#menu and div#menu_items for styling ul lists. I advice rolling back to original plugin file and then start customizing the plugin via Dropdown Menu options page. You can use Custom CSS area for customization issues. Those will override any css rules in the core files. You should remove
      #menu_items ul, #menu_items li and #menu_items a rules from your stylesheet for a better control over customization.

  167. Yarek says:

    Many thanks for this widget!
    I have a question, how can I disable standout of current page in menu, I was able to disble ancestor menu stand out, but I have trouble to find correct code for current page. For the moment I use modified your simple-theme.

    Many Thanks

    1. shailan says:

      Hello Yarek,
      You can easily override current page item color using code below:

      /** Current menu item */
      li.current-cat a, li.current_page_item a, li.current-menu-item a,
      li.current-cat a:link, li.current_page_item a:link, li.current-menu-item a:link,
      li.current-cat a:visited, li.current_page_item a:visited, li.current-menu-item a:visited{ color: #ed008c; }

      Put this code to Custom CSS area in dropdown menu settings page. Please change #ed008c to anything you like. For simple theme default link color is: #000 (hex value for black)

      Thanks for your feedback.

  168. ibit says:

    @Mirjam: Thank you for your suggestion. It was a “duh” moment when I realized earlier that my theme is the problem. I should find one that has a horizontal widget like the one you suggested. BTW, your sites are very nice.

  169. ibit says:

    Like Rhondace, I would like to make two horizontal menus: above and below the header.
    Currently this plugin is installed. However, it appears in the widget sections and when used the horizontal menu appears in the sidebar – not what I had expected. How do I get it to look like your example?
    Thank you for the plugin. I hope I can make it work! I am using the Vivee theme.

  170. Rhondace says:

    How do I make the menu the top navigation menu on the site?

  171. Mirjam says:

    First of all I truly appreciate this plugin. After fixing a little bug in IE with the margin (was in em) I works perfect in the sidebar on all browser.
    I have a question, I hope you can point to the right direction. If the mouse goes over the menu bar a “pop-up” shows up with says ” View all posts under (and than the category)”. I would like to remove this as this hovers on top of the actually menu items.

    Where in the codes is this programmed and how can I disable it?

    Thank you.

  172. EricSlatonBSSE says:

    I had to deactivate the plugin after upgrading to WP 3.0
    I just upgraded the plugin and activated it and it still does not work for me?
    It takes away my site logo and it makes my navigation into just plain UL markup now?

  173. shailan says:

    Hello Robert,
    Unfortunately this new version reset all the widgets + settings.
    Please make sure you re-save & edit your widgets.
    After all is done please send me a link so i can check your site.

    Thanks for your feedback.

    ( Note: I just checked wp2.9 on my local server and it seem to work )

  174. Robert says:

    After upgrading i could not see the dropdownmenu anymore. When i disabel it, i get the rest of the widget (but still no dropdown menu). So it has to do something with thsi plugin and upgrade.
    I still have wordpress 2.9.
    The upgrade might be a problem if you still have 2.9?

  175. shailan says:

    The latest version of the dropdown should fix that.

  176. Clare009 says:

    Have found that the submenus do not dropdown if using the latest version of Firefox and I.E.

  177. shailan says:

    It wasnt meant a release but had some problems with subversion.
    The new version will bring more control on the appearance.
    I am going to fix the problems today.

  178. KarmaTiger says:

    Your “update” as of today SUCKS.

    - it reset all the settings to default, so pages showed where categories were meant to show, etc.

    - even when settings were manually restored, the new CSS overrid things like text sizes even with the old theme .css files FTP'ed overtop of the 'updated' ones

    - ALL categories are suddenly visible, not just the ones that actually have articles in them, which makes for a frustrating experience for readers if they're on a blog with categories set for future use

    This last one really takes the cake. Why the hell would you do that?

  179. Alexander says:

    I was wondering if it were possible to link to other chosen pages rather than just “home”, etc. as I want to display an “about” page next to the categories in the menu bar.

    If this isn’t possible, are you planning to include it in a future update?

    1. shailan says:

      Hello Alexander, thanks for using my plugin. With wordpress 3 this functionality will be added to the wordpress. That’s why i am not working on this functionality. WordPress 3 will be available really really soon.

  180. Will says:

    I wrote earlier trying to modify the menu width to 800px. After much trial and error I was able to do that but now it aligns left and I have spent hours trying to align this menu center so it works w/my theme. the menu theme I am using is shiny black. can you tell me how to get it to center instead of align left? Thanks!

    1. shailan says:

      The dropdown menu widget has an option for center alignment. You are using the template tag as i understand. The alignment with template tag is not yet supported. I will add this option soon. If you like you can read this simple tutorial on adding widget areas to your theme and you can start using widgets as you like.

      1. Will says:

        yeah I have been using the template tag. I’ll try to set up the widget area instead. thanks!

  181. Sofie says:

    I love your plugin! I just wanted to know if you are aware of any problems it might be giving with the display of thumbnail pictures in the “featured post” area. I have a featured posts div on my landing page and I can’t get the featured thumbnail to work. Any ideas?

    Thanks for a great plugin!

    1. shailan says:

      Hello Sofie, if you see your featured thumbnails after you disable dropdown menu then there may be a function name collision. Then just send me your theme files and i will fix it for you.

  182. Jeroen says:

    I’m using a font replacement script:

    But it won’t work together with your dropdown menu in IE8.
    Other browsers just work fine. When I chose a standard font it works in every browser too.

    I added on line 81 in “shailan-page-walker.php” (the way to communicate with the font repacement script) like this:

    [pre]$output .= $indent . ‘ID) . ‘” >’ . $link_before . apply_filters(‘the_title’, $page->post_title) . $link_after . ‘‘;[/pre]

      I am trying to use your dropdown menu on my site in place of the current menu but need to resize it down to 800px width. I can’t find the code to change, can you help me out? or, do you know of another plugin that would work better? Thanks!

  184. Attila says:

    Can I add a menu item which points to an external link?
    Somehow e.g. by adding a parameter for the main shailan_dropdown_menu() function? Is there any solution for this?

    1. shailan says:

      For now no, With “wordpress 3″ this option will be added to all navigation menus. You can try page links to plugin. It is a great plugin for redirects. You can get it here.

  185. Enrico says:

    Hello! I would like to know about the file /wp-content/plugins/dropdown-menu-widget/include.js.
    What it is for?
    Using Internet Explorer8, this file make an error on my page.
    With Firefox, no problem.
    I tried to delete the file, and now all looks right, but I’m not sure if it was a good idea to delete that JS file…
    I’m sorry for my terrible English.

    1. shailan says:

      Hello Enrico, I fixed the error with the script. It is needed to enable dropdown effect with Internet Explorer browsers. Next version will have your menu fixed. Thanks for comments..

      1. Enrico says:

        Thanks Shailan. I have on more question, please. Because of my bad English, it is easier if you see the problem:
        please, visit my site http://www.guidedolomiti.com/wp and click to an image to enlarge it. What happens to the menu?

  186. kakiinternet says:

    Hi shailan,

    the 1.3.8 version make the menu went to the left in firefox, but not in chrome. The previous version works OK on both firefox and chrome. What changes this?

    1. shailan says:

      Hmm, weird. I didn’t change anything with the alignment. Left alignment doesn’t actually make the menu left aligned. It leaves <div> tag as is which has an alignment of “inherit”. You can add text-align:left; to the style input of the widget maybe..

  187. James says:

    Hi there,

    I like your plugin ;-). Is there a way to show all categories, even those that don’t have a post?

    1. shailan says:

      Nope, wordpress core functions doesn’t return the categories with no posts. Why do you want to show them anyways?

  188. Øystein says:

    I love this menu, but I would like to adjust the width of the parent folders in the menu, or a option to make each folder equaly wide. I think this would be a great suplement to the automated adjusment in proportion to the pages title the menu have now. Is it possible to change the width?

    1. shailan says:

      Yes it is possible to change the width. It all depends on CSS. Some themes allow width to be changed but some certain themes (like Shiny Black theme) doesn’t allow it since it has a fixed background image. Which theme are you using?

      1. Øystein says:

        I use the simple white theme. You can see my site at http://www.tradingmill.com

        As you can see all my page folders have different sizes as they have different text. As example the folder named “Useful Traidng Oscillators” is the widest of them. I want all my menu folders equaly big as I think this will give a nice symatri to the layout.

        1. shailan says:

          If you add this code to your theme stylesheet:

          .shailan-dropdown-menu ul.dropdown {
          		white-space: nowrap;

          the menu items wont wrap and it will seem nice. I should add this line to that theme in the next version i think..
          See if this helps?

  189. Harald says:

    Hi, nice plugin:) I’d like to change the width of the horizontal menu bar, because it is extending over the edges of my page (i use the WP default theme template). Is the width of the menu defined in one of the css or php templates?

    Thanks, Harald

    1. shailan says:

      Thanks. Well the default theme doesn’t have a width specified. It fits the width of the container. You can easily change the width using shailan-dropdown-menu class in your theme CSS.

      I can help you if you need.

    The reason this isn’t working right on IE6, 7, OR 8 Is because the author made no attempt to make it work. It is impossible to make this work in it’s current state without editing the entire hover states of the CSS, as well as the HTML markup to be compatible with CSS hover action.

    The > operator has no support in IE until IE9. However, this project http://code.google.com/p/ie7-js/ .. If you put that into your site it will allow it to work, since it gives IE6, 7, and 8 full support of the > operator (which is key in this case for the menu to work)

    To the author: My suggestion would be to put a note about that on the main page, or to change the menu so its compatible. I don’t think offering wordpress themes that deliberately ignore IE is a good idea without some sort of note saying it won’t work. Or at the very least say that it won’t work in IE.

    1. shailan says:

      The dropdown ability of the menu depends on li:hover which is not currently supported by older versions of IE. > is just another fix. For now this plugin only works for smart browsers.

      Thanks for your additions.

      Fix will be added soon.

      1. Mike says:

        li:hover is supported easily with the IE9.js as well as others that don’t lag.. IE still reads li:hover but does nothing.

        > tells CSS to use the element after the one specified, IE reads this entire entry as UNDEFINED and can’t do anything with it, which requires IE9.js specifically to allow this to work (or lengthy scripts that have similar functions). Currently IE5.5 through 7 have no way to mimic that behavior in CSS, and loading IE9.js adds several seconds of “frozen” load time to a page.

        The only way to make it work natively in IE is to change your HTML markup to use hidden child elements inside of neighboring elements. Unfortunately it’s technically not valid HTML to put block elements inside inline -.-;; well, with the li:hover js fix it’s fine – my opinion is to include that js fix in and then change the HTML markup, put the hover menu ul’s inside the parent li

    I just recently installed this and was wondering if it was possible to change the order the posts line up in? As in – would I be able to do it alphabetically? Or a custom order?

    Thanks for a great plug-in…

    Is it possible to disable the top-level parent link?
    That page on my site is blank, only the nested pages have content.
    Even if I could change the link to ‘#’ that would do it.

    Thanks, Rob.

    1. Rob says:

      I’ve found this plug-in which solves the problem, it allows you to change the link of a page to anything you like, including ‘#’

  193. robert elliott says:

    I changed the overflow visible in the style.css but nothing changed…is there somewhere else that it needs to be changed… I looked through the docs for the widget itself but could not find where there was anything about overflow…please help!

    I am having the problem with the overlapping containers…I did not see a fix…great freaking plugin by the way! I would love it if I could use it in my site.

    I am using the dropdown menu on http://www.wllfa.com. It’s a great plugin but I am having the same issue as Ethel — my client I am designing the website for uses IE 6 and the dropdowns have problems (see the screenshot below). They can’t install IE 7 or 8 on their work computer since they are not admins. Are there any fixes for older browsers?

    Screenshot of the issue: http://img6.imageshack.us/img6/5770/screenshotbg.gif

    Hi Shilan,
    Your drop-down menu is very nice and it works fine on my page, but I have aproblem to make it work on Internet Explorer 6. Is there a solution?
    Thank you for your answer, Ethel

    Nearest I’ve got yet to a ‘plug-n-play’ replacement for the default WP menu.

    I’m having trouble positioning it to replace the former theme menu (Snowblind by Bavotasan http://themes.bavotasan.com/our-themes/basic-themes/snowblind but that’s probably my ineptness with CSS ( I HATE css with a vengeance)

    One weird behaviour is in the WP admin interface for the plugin, though. The theme chooser doesn’t work and won’t drop down….unless I select the theme chooser (it gets outlined in blue but won’t actually drop down) and then select and copy a piece of text on the page (any text)…then the drop down options suddenly appear! As I say, this is in the plugin admin. Well weird!

    1. Hugh says:

      Must have been something temporary because I can select the themes now! I’ve also managed (kind of!) to position the menu roughly where I want it, more by luck and a prayer than any css knowledge!

      What I want to know is, can I limit the level depth of the menu? I only want to show one level of drop down (the first group of sub-pages), even though I have three levels of links.

      Can this be altered somewhere in the plugin file?

  199. Muad says:

    Very nice plugin! I wonder if it is possible to arrange the pages in an alphabetic order? that would be great. as you can see now on my website http://www.pathofysiologie.nl/ the first menu starts with an O and the second with an A. can I change that order?

  200. Bill says:

    My suggestion is almost the same as Roger’s on January 11. I want the drop down to show one or two pages out of a total of more than 50 … so maybe an “include” pages option in addition to, or instead of, the “exclude” option would work. It’s a very good plugin and works well, even if it’s necessary to list all of the pages to exclude. Thanks for the plugin.

  201. Roger says:

    Hi Shailan,

    Many thanks for a great plugin.

    I’d really like a feature to enable pages to be excluded from the nav menu based on some criteria, such as a custom field – eg only pages with nav_menu = 1 would be on the menu. That way, the site designer can be sure only pages explicity setup to be on the menu would actually appear there. Is this a feature you’d be interested to add – I could help with the code if required?

    -Best wishes, Roger.

    Hi great plugin, it works great on my site but I am having trouble using it with the Facebox plugin. Which file would I need to edit, and where, so that I can add the ‘ rel=”facebox” ‘ code so that the links in the menu will open up the ‘Facebox’ popup instead of a regular page.

    1. shailan says:

      This can be done by editing shailan-page-walker.php. Open the file and find <a href="' . get_page_link($page->ID) . '" > (line:81). Add your rel code in just before closing “>”. Like this: <a href="' . get_page_link($page->ID) . '" rel="facebox" > . This will make any page menu have the rel code you entered.

    Hi Shailan, I have just installed your Dropdown Menu plugin but have difficulties tuning it. In particular, how can I make the categories horisontal, instead of verical? It seams that there is no option to do so…

  204. Sushant says:

    Hi I am now facing a new problem. The extreme right menu category has a sub category with another sub category. That menu opens to the right side away from the visibility of the browser. Plz spare some time and check my homepage to see the problem.
    Television menu on the right with sub menu Sony.

  205. Peter says:

    Found my problem! It was caused by an overflow set to hidden on original theme. Once I turned the Overflow to visible it worked! The whole time I thought it was z-index or float it was really sidebar overflow.
    Hope this helps your new plugin update?

    1. shailan says:

      Oh that’s great you solved it. I will add this to troubleshoot items. My trouble still continues though. My two menus on top overlap each other. I gotta solve this :/

  206. Peter says:

    I must have tried more than a dozen z-index locations and tests? nothing? drop-down is hiding behind my #content from theme css. Which takes priority? float or z-index? So far you’ve come the closest to what I want without having to manually embed it in the code, which I’m trying to avoid. Thx, for getting this far.

  207. Peter says:

    Where should I change the z-index? The drop down is going behind my container.

    1. shailan says:

      You can change it in the shailan-dropdown.css. I have a similar issue right now. I will fix it and update the plugin soon.

  208. Sushant says:

    Hi, is there any way to add a custom link to the menu. E.g I want a link to HOME page with text HOME in the current menu.

    1. shailan says:

      For now it doesn’t support custom added links. Later versions of the widget includes “Home” link for the Pages type menus. Did that help?

  209. Sushant says:

    Nice plugin. Working fine in my site.
    Thank You

    man, I don know but this widget crashed my site as soon as I activated it everything was sent tumbling b4 crash

    1. shailan says:

      Can you send me your wordpress url so that i can see what the problem is. Plugin works on wordpress installations higher than 2.8. That may be the problem.
